BIO

Joanne Griffiths is a British painter working across oil paint, charcoal and drawing. Her practice centres on the human figure, using distortion, compression and fragmented form to explore how lived experience can become physically and psychologically embodied.

Her work has developed through an ongoing interest in care, vulnerability, dependency, endurance and the pressures placed on the body by personal, relational and institutional experience. Rather than pursuing anatomical accuracy, Griffiths uses the figure as a means of expressing emotional and psychological states that are often difficult to articulate directly.

Alongside full-body works, she produces psychologically charged portraits in which the face becomes a site of tension, erosion and instability rather than straightforward likeness.

Her approach is process-led and physical. Charcoal, exposed marks, erasure and disrupted surfaces remain visible, allowing the making of the work to become part of its meaning.

Griffiths is currently developing her practice towards a more concentrated visual language in which the body becomes less descriptive and more symbolic: a form shaped by pressure, memory, care and endurance.
